Elgin’s Military Salute Project-Potter Community Park

Town of Elgin’s Military Salute Project

It is finally official, the location of the Town of Elgin’s Military Salute will be Potter Community Park. It will be located at the front of the property close to Main Street and will be centrally located on the lot. The flags will be placed in a half circle design and the sign for Potter Community Park will be in the center.

This is going to be a beautiful attraction for our community and a great way to show our appreciation and to honor those who have served our country and those who continue to serve. With the upcoming development of Potter Community Park we felt this location would be the most suitable for several reasons-visibility being located on Main Street and those who attend activities at this spot would be able to enjoy it.

The current plans will consist of the following: (1) 25 foot pole with the United States of America Flag, (1) 20 foot pole with the South Carolina State Flag, (5) 20 foot poles with a flag representing the United States Army, a flag representing the United States Navy, a flag representing the United States Marine Corps, a flag representing the United States Air Force and a flag representing the United States Coast Guard and (1) 20 foot pole with a POW/MIA Flag. The estimated cost to complete this project is $8,265.75, which includes the labor/installation of the flagpoles and sales tax. There will also be lighting installed to illuminate the flags at night, which will increase the cost slightly, but I’m certain this will be a breathtaking view as you enter or exit our community.

At this time, we have received a verbal commitment of a donation from Camden/Lugoff Elks Lodge in the amount of $1,550.00. We have also received verbal commitments for the donation of the flags for the United States of America, the State of South Carolina, the United States Army, the United States Marine Corps and the United States Navy. We would like to personally thank all of these individuals and organizations for being committed and assisting us with this project.

We will be seeking further donations to assist with the remainder of the cost of this project and if you’d like to help out in any way, please feel free to contact me at 803-309-1385 (cell) or email me at Melissa.emmons@townofelginsc.com. We would like to be able to complete this project and have a dedication ceremony for Memorial Day on Monday, May 26, 2014. This will be a wonderful opportunity to honor the memory of a loved one who has served our country in the military and to show appreciation to our loved ones who continue to serve or have since retired. Please join the Town of Elgin as we pay tribute to the men and women who have made a difference in our country and fought for us to have the freedoms we enjoy today. Below you will see a photo of a similar project located in the Town of Aynor, South Carolina in which we hope to model the appearance of ours-in place of the Town of Aynor Sign, will be the Potter Community Park Sign. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions.
