Bridge Replacement

The SCDOT plans to replace the bridge on Watson Street near Elgin in Kershaw County.

The replacement of the bridge is necessary due to the bridge being structurally deficient. The bridge is being replaced with a new 60 foot prestressed concrete bridge. The bridge will be closed on May 11, 2015, for approximately ten weeks. Pending any delays due to weather conditions, fabricator delays, etc., the new bridge should be reopened to traffic by July 17, 2015.

Due to the relatively low traffic volumes, and in order to minimize the construction duration, cost, and impact to property owners in the area, the road will be closed and traffic detoured during construction. The current plan is for the detour to use roads S-396 (Bookman Road) and S-48 (Bowen Street). The net detour length will be approximately -0.27 miles shorter.

Kershaw County Schools may be impacted and they will be informed of the pending road closure in order to reroute school bus traffic in the area. There are no major businesses that will be impacted.
