  1. Dennis Greer says:

How do you plan on taking care of the traffic gridlock on Hwy 1 through Elgin. This is terrible.

    • Melissa Emmons says:

Thank you Dennis Greer, we are currently awaiting results of the West Wateree Traffic Study that was conducted last summer and it will address traffic concerns on Highway 1 from the Richland County Line into Lugoff, White Pond Road and other areas in this section of Kershaw County. You can find information about this on the Central Midlands Council of Governments website, in addition to prior posts when meetings were held and surveys collected on the Town of Elgin website.

This is an issue that will require funding from the federal and state government and roads are a hot topic for the General Assembly this year. We recently had a study conducted by SCDOT of Highway 1 in the town limits and we suggested an additional traffic light at the intersection of Hwy. 1/Pine Street and they informed us that the volume of traffic did not warrant such light. They did inform us that the widening of Hwy. 1 is recommended in the West Wateree Study, but there are no funds to complete the project.

A meeting was held at Lugoff-Elgin High School for the public on February 13th with some suggestions and they are currently gathering public input before a final recommendation will go before Kershaw County Council. We will continue to pursue assistance with our traffic and County is working with us as we prepare to meet with our Legislative Delegates to seek the funds needed for the solutions.

      Melissa Emmons
